President Barack Obama
Obama is the 44th President of the United States. His story is the American storyvalues from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others. With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton's army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank. After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, President Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants. He went on to attend law school, where he became the first African-American president of theUpon graduation, he returned to Chicagoto help lead a voter registration drive, teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and remain active in his community.President Obama's years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. In the IllinoisState Senate, he passed the first major ethics reform in 25 years, cut taxes forworking families, and expanded health care for children and their parents. As a United States Senator, he reached across the aisle to pass groundbreakinglobbying reform, lock up the world's most dangerous weapons, and bring transparency to government by putting federal spending
Obama vows federal help for Irene victims
President Barack Obama on Sunday urged Republicans not to play politics with federal disaster aid as he toured flood-stricken New Jersey and pledged to do everything possible to help states recover after Hurricane Irene.
With rain-swollen rivers receding in the Northeast after the region suffered its worst flooding in decades, Obama was greeted by cheering crowds of several thousand people lining the streets of the working-class city of Paterson, one of hardest-hit from the storm.
The Democratic president was joined in his first look at the storm damage by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a budget-cutting Republican who has bucked some of his party's fiscal hawks in Washington by calling for expedited federal aid to help his state's recovery.
We'll do everything we can to help you
When disaster strikes, Americans suffer -- not Republicans, not Democrats, not independents -- andwe come together," White Housetraveling with Obama.Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representativeslast week that any newdisaster aid must be offset with spending cuts elsewhere to avoid adding to the budget deficit, projected to hit $1.3 trillion this year.
But Christie, a rising Republican star and blunt-talking fiscal conservative who has repeatedly denied any interest in seeking his party's 2012 presidential nomination, has called for immediate assistance for his state.
He has insisted that New Jersey cannot wait while lawmakers in Washington fight over budget offsets.
That makes Christie an unlikely ally for Obama, who is seeking re-election next year, in the debateover storm relief. The two men shook hands warmly at the bottom of Air Force One's staircase and then boarded a presidential helicopter for an aerial tour of the storm damage. The Obama administration opposes Cantor's position, and Democrats who oversee disaster fundingthey would refuse to cut other boost emergency aid.Asked about Cantor's push for budget offsets, Obama"we are going to make sure that the resources are here."

Standing on a bridge over the rain-swollen Passaic River in central Paterson, Obama noted there had been a talk of a slowdown in aid and dismissed that, promising: "We are going to meet our federal obligations."
"The last thing that residents ... need is Washington politics getting in the way of making sure we're doing what we can,
Obama, who did not mention Republicans by name.Earlier, Obama consoled homeowners at his first stop in a poor neighborhood in the town of Wayne, telling them the federal government would do everything possible to help them.I know it's a hard time right now," Obama a group of residents clustered around him on the street. "You guys hang in there. We'll do everything we can to help you
Irene cut a swath of destruction from North Carolina to Vermont and was blamed for at least 40 deaths. Total economic losses have been estimated at more than $10 billion.
New Jersey was especially hammered by flooding in the storm's wake last week. The floodwaters swept away homes, swamped roads and bridges and left hundreds of thousands without electricity.
Paterson now faces a massive cleanup after the Passaic River overflowed its banks in the center of the city of 150,000, dealing the latest blow to a one-time industrial powerhouse that has fallen on hard times.Obama declared New Jersey a disaster area on Wednesday, making the state eligible for federal disaster aid.He is expected to ask Congress for extra funds to help recover from Irene, but Washington'sunrelenting budget battles -- and a deepening ideological divide between Republicans and Democratsover the role of government -- could complicate relief efforts.

Apollo 18
Like Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Lovecraft’s Diary Of Alonzo Typer and The Blair Witch Project, Apollo 18 takes the form of recovered first person documentation unearthed after an isolated misadventure. In many ways, this lens seems a natural choice to view such a story through, given both its reliance on a specific point in time and its emphasis on exploration, but because of a poorly conceived basic structure and the similarity of its main characters, Apollo 18 crumbles beneath what should have been a promising format.
There’s a reason why other people’s home movies are tedious and long. Without the ability to manufacture dialogue to clarify emotions, motivations and back stories, the full importance can never truly be conveyed to a random viewer without incessant interjections from the people who were there. That’s why the parties in question normally spend an inordinate amount of time prefacing what’s about to be seen, but in a theatrical release, it’s impossible to do that. What shows up on screen is the only explanation we get, and with Apollo 18 that’s simply not enough. Who are these men encountering unknown beings on the moon? As far as I can tell, they’re a trio of thirty-ish Astronauts with families who attended one barbecue together.
Apollo 18 opens with an incredibly brief introduction to us followed by home movie footage of that aforementioned barbecue. The public has been told further missions to the moon would be cancelled on account of budget cuts, but the three smiling, hamburger eating explorers know otherwise. They’re preparing for the eighteenth Apollo mission that involves their placing of spy equipment on the lunar surface to monitorExcited but annoyed they can’t tell anyone, the three astronauts take off under the cover of night for their secretive assignment. They encounter weirdness almost immediately.
With one left behind in the shuttle, the other two land their craft and quickly discover an abandoned pod a short distance away. There’s blood everywhere, but the vehicle itself still seems to be mostly intact. Hopped up on Cold War paranoia, the pair fan out to look for Cosmonauts and discover one long since deceased with a rock protruding from his leg. It looks like murder, but what could have possibly led to that?
The Department of Defense denies any knowledge and speculates the dead Soviet must have traveled to the moon alone, a prediction that does little to calm the frightened Astronauts. Even if that’s the case, it certainly doesn’t explain why he met his end or what could be behind a slew of mysterious events like the destruction of a flag or the frequent cutting out of communication equipment. Those poor bastards find out in due time after a spider-looking rock shimmies its way into one of their suits and turns their red scare into extra-terrestrial fear.
With a proper introduction and perhaps a different menace, Apollo 18 might have set itself up for a creepy, edge-of-your-seat conclusion, but as its stands, the final act is just two generic white dudes trying to outrun moon rocks. In its commitment to live in the moment, Brian Miller’s screenplay uses innocuous exchanges, like arguing over who gets to eat the carrots, as stand-ins for actual character description. In a way, it really does make the whole thing seem more like a real story, but I’m not sure it’s a story anyone would really have fun watching.

Apollo 18
In December, 1974, the Department of Defense contacts the crew of the previously-cancelled Apollo 18 mission to inform them that the mission is a go, though it has been deemed top secret. Commander Nathan Walker, Lieutenant Colonel John Grey and Captain Benjamin Anderson are launched towards theMoon, ostensibly to collect moon rocks, but their given mission is to place detectors to alert the United States of any impending attackswhile Walker and Anderson land on the moon in the lunar module Liberty. While planting one of the detectors, the pairtake samples of strange rocks. While attempting to sleep, the pair hear noises outside and a camera captures a small rock moving nearby. Houston claims the noises are interferencedetectors. Anderson finds a rock sample on the floor of Liberty despite having secured the samples. During furtherexploration they discover footprints that lead them tonearby, finding it functional but blood stained. Anderson follows tracks leading into a dark crater and finds a deadWalker queries Houston about the Soviet presence but is rebuffed, told only to continue with the mission. The following day the pair find the flag they had planted missing. Their mission complete, the crew prepares to leave the Moon but the launch is aborted whenLiberty suffers violent shaking. An inspection reveals extensive damage to Liberty and inhuman tracks which Walker cites as evidence of extraterrestrial life. Walker feels something moving inside his spacesuit and helmet and is horrified as a spider-like creature crawls across the inside of his helmet. Walker disappears from view and Anderson finds him unconscious outside of Liberty. Walker later denies the events. A wound is discovered on Walker's chest; aresulting surgery finds a piece of the Moon rock embedded within. The pair find themselves unable to contact Houstonunknown reasons.Anderson speculates that the true intentionwarning devices is to attract the aliens. Walker shows signs of developing infection as his woundgrows and discolors, and he becomes increasingly paranoid. The mission cameras capture the rock samples moving around the interior of Liberty, revealingthe aliens to be the rocks themselves. Increasingly delusional, Walker attempts to destroy the cameras within Liberty but accidentally damages the systemcontrols, causing Liberty to depressurize. Realizing the Soviet, the pair travel to the their Along theway, Walker attempts to run away, believing he should not leave the Moon and risk spreading the infection to Earth. Anderson crashes as he attempts to stop Walker.

"Jay and I have kind of made a decision that we want to be known for our music and not our relationships or scandals."One relationship that Beyonce had no qualms discussing - the first couple. The pop diva played a role in U.S. history when she sang the Etta James' classic "At Last" while President Barack Obama his wife Michelle danced at the 2009 inaugural ball.It was really powerful and overwhelming," Beyonce said of the event. "I kept telling myself, 'This is not about you. You have to do this for them. You have to do this for history,' and it's the only way I was able to get through that song because I wanted to ball."Even though her singing is what made her famous, Beyonce has also become a respected actress with her roles in films like 'Dreamgirls' and 'Cadillac Records.' Beyonce acknowledged that she enjoys most of the aspects of acting with the exception of shooting love scenes.

I fluctuate in weight a lotAnd as far as my face, I'd never had anything doneWhen asked if she's had breast implants,"I don't like to talk about that."Well, see I have this chest problem," she added. "My bone right here, it's higher on this sideIt's pectoralis something, so I've always struggled with that. You could see they look different sizes all thetime."WHAT IS BURNING MAN?
Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. In this section you will find the peripheral definitions of what the event is as a whole, but to truly understand this event, one must participate. This site serves to try to paint a picture of the Burning Man experience to those who are new to the project, as well as to give those participants looking to keep the fire burning in their daily lives an environment in which to connect to their fellow community members. For a brief yet eloquent overview of the entire event from the time of arrival to the time of exodus, please read "What is Burning Man?", an essay written by participant and one-time web team member, Molly Steenson. Please see archived sections for each year to read more about the art themes, art installations and theme camps for each year.
Here you will find links that will take you on a trip through the past - through the history of Burning Man - from its early days on a small beach in San Francisco through its evolution into the bustling city of some 48,000+ people that the Burning Man event has become today. These people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one's day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event.
There are no rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the playa. By the time the event is completed and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event has ended, there will be no trace of the city that was, for a short time, the most populous town in the entire county. Art is an unavoidable part of this experience, and in fact, is such a part of the experience that Larry Harvey, founder of the Burning Man project, gives a theme to each year, to encourage a common bond to help tie each individual's contribution together in a meaningful way. Participants are encouraged to find a way to help make the theme come alive, whether it is through a large-scale art installation, a theme camp, gifts brought to be given to other individuals, costumes, or any other medium that one comes up with.
The Burning Man project has grown from a small group of people gathering spontaneously to a community of over 48,000 people. It is impossible to truly understand the event as it is now without understanding how it has evolved. See the first years page and Burning Man 1986 - 1996 for the legendary story of Burning Man's beginnings and to understand how the event has come to become what it is today. The timeline gives a short overview of what each year looked like. Please also check out the detailed archives for years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Within each of these years are descriptions each year's art theme, theme camps, large art installations, as well as maps, journals of our city being built, the newsletters to the community for each year, issues of the Black Rock Gazette (a daily news publication produced and printed on the playa), and clean up reports for each year, including a list of those sites that failed to "leave no trace". These pages help understand the larger scope of the entire experience, from the planning that happens year-round to make each event possible, to the clean-up efforts which take place for sometimes months after the city has disappeared.
The impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that a culture has formed around it. This culture pushes the limits of Burning Man and has led to people banding together nation-wide, and putting on their own events, in attempt to rekindle that magic feeling that only being part of this community can provide. The Black Rock Arts Foundation promotes interactive art by supporting public art that exists outside the event, and has a special interest in supporting art at regional events. Additionally, Burning Man has over two thousand volunteers who work before, during and after the event (many who work year-round) to make the event a reality. To give of your time and talents, please see the Participate section of the website.
If this is your first visit to this site, a good starting point is the FAQ page, the glossary, and the timeline. From here you can stroll through the carefully archived sections for each year. Community, participation, self-expression, self-reliance; these tenets of Burning Man are lifeblood of the Burning Man experience. Whether you are new to this site or are returning for your umpteenth visit, you are encouraged to delve into these pages to expand your viewpoint and definition of these ideals, and to connect with yourself to find your niche in our community. The giving of yourself is the greatest gift you can give to the Burning Man community, and is imperative to the survival of this unique experiment.
